“Built Up Roofing” is just that; layers of HOT asphalt, tar paper, and a final coating of pea gravel to protect the assembly from UV and other harsh elements. This roofing method is the “grandfather of roofing systems” being that more buildings over more time in most of the US have or had been built with this roof system. Currently less than one percent of roofs specified call for this method yet, it is still a very high-performance roofing solution.
